This policy describes how Spotify uses cookies and similar technologies (collectively, "cookies"). From now on, we'll call it the 'Policy'. The purpose of this Policy is to provide you with clear information about Spotify's use of cookies and similar technologies. It applies to anyone using Spotify's services or websites (together called the 'Services'). This policy also explains the choices you have for managing your cookie settings.
1. What are cookies?
Cookies and similar technologies, such as pixel tags, are small files that are downloaded to your device. In this policy, we'll refer to them collectively as "cookies". These files are placed on your device when you interact with Spotify's properties. For example, this can happen when you visit our website, use our app, engage with one of our advertisements, or open an email from us. You can find more general information about cookies at:www.youronlinechoices.eu.
2. How do we use cookies?
Cookies perform many different functions. They allow you to move between pages more efficiently. They also remember your preferences and help improve your experience. They can also help ensure that ads you see online are more relevant to you and your interests. Along with cookies used on our website and services, we also use these technologies in our emails. They also show us how users engage with our content. These technologies are controlled through our cookie banner. They can be managed according to your consent preferences.
Along with cookies, Spotify might create or use pseudonymous universal identifiers. These are based on personal data you provide, such as your email address, IP address, or phone number. These universal identifiers may be shared with third parties. Similar to cookies, they make it possible to recognize you on different websites and applications, show you advertisements that match your interests, and track how services are used. You can control whether your personal data is used to make or use universal identifiers for advertisements in our cookie banner. See Section 3 Options for managing cookies and tailored ads.
Spotify uses two main categories of cookie: (1) strictly necessary cookies, and (2) optional cookies:
- *Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are set by Spotify or a third party on our behalf. They are essential to enable you to use the features of our Services. They let you do things like watch content, set your privacy choices, sign in, pay for services, or fill out forms. Without these cookies, our Services cannot be provided, so you cannot decline them.
- *Optional Cookies
Optional cookies may be 'first party cookies' or 'third party cookies', as explained in the table below. Optional cookies also differ depending on the purpose they are used for, as explained in the first column.
|
First party cookies - these are cookies set directly by Spotify or by a third party at our request |
|
|---|---|
|
Optional Cookie Type |
Purposes |
|
First party functional cookies |
These cookies allow our Services to remember choices you make, such as your user name, language, or the region you are in and provide enhanced, more personal features and content. For example, these cookies can be used to remember changes you have made to parts of web pages that you can customise. If you do not allow these cookies, then some of the choices you have made on previous visits to our Services will not be saved. |
|
First party performance cookies |
These cookies gather data about how visitors use our Services. For example, these cookies allow us to count visits to our website and to understand how visitors found the website. They also help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and to see how visitors interact with our Services. All of this helps us to measure and improve the performance of our Services. If you do not allow these cookies, we will not receive data about your use of our Services to help us to monitor the performance of our Services. |
|
First party targeting cookies |
These cookies collect information about your browsing habits in order to deliver advertisements more relevant to you and to understand your interests. They are also used to limit the number of times you see an advertisement, as well as help measure the effectiveness of the advertisements Spotify shares. These cookies log that you have visited a website, and this information may be shared with other organisations such as advertisers. If you do not allow these cookies, you will still experience advertising, but it will be less tailored to you. |
|
Third party cookies - these are cookies that are set directly by a third party or set by Spotify at the request of a third party, such as our analytics or advertising service providers. You can see a list of these partners at this link by expanding the relevant cookie category and clicking ‘List of IAB Vendors’. |

3. Options for managing cookies and tailored ads
This section explains how you can manage your cookie preferences, based on the type of cookie and the device you use. You may need to combine two or more options to manage cookies on all of your devices.
Consent Management Platform
To help you manage your cookie preferences, Spotify uses a consent management platform (CMP), also known as a cookie banner. The CMP also allows us to maintain records of your consent. You may view the CMP and access your cookie settings at this link.
Using the CMP, you can:
- **Accept Cookies **to allow for optional cookies set by us and our third party partners or
- **Reject All **to decline all optional cookies
- Manage your preferences for first-party cookies, by category of cookie (see Section 2 How do we use cookies?)
- You can manage your preferences for third party cookies according to:
- the purpose of processing
- the legal basis for that processing, or
- the third-party partners involved
You may disable all third party cookies by toggling off the control next to 'store and/or access information' on your device. As set out above, some third party optional cookie purposes are described as 'Always Active'. This means that if you do not want cookie data to be processed for these purposes, you can turn off the 'store and/or access information' control; and
- Opt out of the creation or use of universal identifiers for advertising purposes. Spotify will not generate or use a universal identifier to tailor advertisements to you if you have:
- rejected all optional cookies, or
- opted out of tailored advertising (also known as interest-based advertising) on Spotify by turning off the tailored ads toggle in the Account Privacypage of your Spotify Account
- Some of our third party partners may rely on legitimate interestas their legal basis for using cookies or processing your data, instead of asking for your consent. This means they consider that their use of your data is necessary to provide certain services or to support their business, and that it does not override your rights and interests. You can review which partners rely on legitimate interests in our CMP. Where a partner relies on legitimate interests, you still have the right to object to their processing. **You can exercise this choice directly in the CMP by toggling off the relevant partner and purpose. You can also object to all processing based on legitimate interest by rejecting all optional cookies in the CMP or turning off the tailored ads toggle *
If you wish to update your consent choices via the CMP, please visit this link.
Please note that you will not be able to withdraw consent for cookies which are strictly necessary for the Service to operate.
Spotify takes part in the IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework and adheres to its rules and policies. We use the CMP with the identification number 28.
Web Browser Settings
You can also use your web browser settings to accept, refuse, and delete cookies. To do this, follow the instructions provided by your browser (usually located within the 'Help', 'Tools', or 'Edit' settings).
Mobile Settings
Your mobile device's operating system may let you opt out of tailored advertising or reset your 'mobile identifier'. This identifier is a unique code that can be used to recognize your device and works much like a cookie. For example, you may use the 'Allow Apps to Request to Track' setting on iOS devices or the 'Opt out of Interest-Based Ads' on Android devices. These settings allow you to limit the use of information about your use of apps for purposes of serving ads tailored to your interests.
Tailored Ads Toggle
In the Spotify Service, you can opt out of tailored advertising. To do so, turn off the tailored ads toggle in the Account Privacy page of your Spotify Account. If you turn off the tailored ads toggle, Spotify will stop sharing your information with third party advertising partners. Spotify will also stop using their information to show you tailored advertisements. You may still see advertisements in the Services based on your Spotify registration details and how you use Spotify in real time. However, these advertisements may be less relevant to you.
Some tailored advertisements shown by Spotify, or by a service provider on our behalf, may include the 'Ad Choices' icon. This icon, or a similar tool, lets you opt out of receiving tailored advertisements. You may click on the AdChoices icon or visit www.aboutads.info to:
- learn more about the collection and use of information about your online activities for tailored advertising; or
- opt out of the use of your data for tailored advertising by the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) participating companies
European users can visit www.youronlinechoices.com to learn more about opting out of tailored advertising by European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance (EDAA) member companies.
